Decision table testing practice

Complete decision tables, find which rule a test case belongs to, and collapse tables to the fewest rules. New problems every time.

Tip: write the rules in a fixed order (Yes, Yes, Yes first), so you never skip a combination.

The idea in a minute

A decision table lists every combination of conditions (the rules) and the action that should result from each. It is the right tool when several conditions combine to decide an outcome. With n yes/no conditions the full table has 2n rules.

When some condition does not change the result for a group of rules, you can collapse the table: merge rules that give the same actions and differ in only one condition, and mark that condition “-” (does not matter). Coverage is the share of rules that your tests exercise.

How to work a problem

Read each sentence of the rule, then evaluate it for one combination of conditions at a time. Be careful with “or”, “and” and “only if”.
